Mission Statement

The mission of the PCOS Foundation is to spread knowledge and understanding of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The PCOS Foundation’s programs are created concerning three key concepts: awareness, education and outreach.

Awareness

A vast majority of the U.S. population has no knowledge of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), including many of the women and adolescent girls who may be affected by PCOS. Females must be aware of the symptoms, health precautions, and risks for diseases associated with PCOS to help prevent future health complications.

The PCOS Foundation has created several awareness programs and events to spur a general consciousness of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Each year in September, which is PCOS awareness month, the PCOS Foundation hosts the PCOS Awareness 5K Fun Run and a fundraising gala, makes media appearances to discuss PCOS, forms an awareness campaign, and uses every opportunity possible to make more Americans aware of PCOS. The Foundation’s year-round awareness programs offer information to the public through the media, internet and is furthered with its education programs.

Education

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is difficult for most doctors to recognize and diagnose because it can cause a variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms. For this reason, many of the women and girls who are diagnosed do not receive enough medical education about treatment and maintenance for their PCOS. When PCOS is not treated and maintained, symptoms worsen and the risk of developing life-threatening diseases increases dramatically.

The PCOS Foundation’s health education programming provides general knowledge of PCOS, helps develop healthy lifestyle habits, alerts girls and women to the dangers of ignoring signs of PCOS, and helps prepare them for life-long care.

Outreach

PCOS affects an estimated 7 million women and adolescent girls in the U.S. alone. The PCOS Foundation's outreach programming works to extend the benefits of its education and awareness programs to as many women and girls as possible.

The PCOS Foundation is a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
